BSN: Criminal Background Check

Complete the Background Check Required for Admission

  1. Go to the Verified Credentials Web site external Web site and select "Nursing Students."
  2. Read the "Dear Nursing Student Applicant" letter.
  3. Click on the "To begin ordering your background check report" link.
  4. Note that UW Tacoma students do not download forms. Instead, simply select "Next."
  5. Select "University of Washington, School of Nursing, RN - BSN (Tacoma)."
  6. You will see a list of the background checks to be conducted and the fee amount. Select "Next."
  7. On the last page, you will be required to provide identifying information as well as a payment source for the fee, which is $69.00. (International applicants will check the "non-U.S. Candidate" box and enter a country ID number instead of a Social Security Number.)

Some Things to Remember:

The Verified Credentials Web site directs all applicants through the process. Once they complete your background check, a report will be sent to your e-mail address. If you have spam or junk mail filtering for your e-mail account, there is a chance this report will get filtered out and that you will need to look for it in your junk mail folder. It generally takes only a few days to receive your completed report.

The UW School of Nursing will have online access to your completed Verified Credentials background check report. n Should the background check raise areas of concern related to your participation in a School of Nursing program, you will be contacted by UW Tacoma Nursing staff.

The background check is a REQUIRED part of the application procedure. You will want to submit the necessary information to Verified Credentials in a timely fashion so that review of your application to UW Tacoma Nursing will not be delayed. Without it, your application will not be considered, as your participation in clinical work would be prohibited. Applicants with a criminal history are encouraged to submit a written statement with their application materials, which explains the circumstances. Applicants who do not answer criminal history background checks truthfully will not be considered. Background checks that provide evidence of a criminal history will be considered on a case by case basis.
