Technology and Entrepreneurship Certificate

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This certificate prepares individuals and companies the background overview of world wide web infrastructures and solutions necessary to successfully navigate, utilize and leverage the internet for information, communications and business. Starting with a conversational introduction to the history and evolution of the online world, emphasis in on using real world analogies and experiences to recognize the opportunities that exist today and what new ones will evolve as new technologies are introduced. In the second course, a combination of a guest lecture series and information about starting an online business helps the student to understand the entrepreneurial potential of the web. Finally, in teams of four and five, students will put their ideas and understanding of the web into action on projects that are self designed to contribute back into the community in which they live and work.


COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Class meets: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Living and Working in a Virtual World: Platforms and Applications of the World Wide Web
An examination and appreciation of the various technical topologies including those that are new and emerging, which create experiences analogous to a variety of working and living situations. Students will learn how to navigate and utilize the virtual world of the web and understand, appreciate and apply the basic underpinnings of information retrieval, entertainment, community and commerce. Students will discover the diverse types of technology that combine to create the World Wide Web and will study the businesses, services and applications that use those technologies. After a brief history of the Internet and an introduction to the protocols and international standards that support it, teams will create simple web sites as new technologies and applications are discussed. From publishing to e-tailing, from housing to travel, from entertainment to finance, real-world examples of successes and failures will provide glimpses into the client/server world of computing, with information on security, personalization, databases and the building of virtual communities. New and emerging virtual phenomenon, such as Consumer Generated Media (CGM), podcasting and the semantic web will cap off the course.

Entrepreneurship in Computing and Software Systems
A study of the process of developing a product or service in the field of Computing and Software Systems.
Student will prepare a plan for commercialization, and implementing that plan. Includes lectures by professionals who have experience and success in beginning businesses. Upon completion a student should be able to:

  • Understand the overview of business creation and ongoing operations.
  • Create a thorough business plan with product or service description.
  • Effectively communicate the business concept and opportunity.
  • Be aware of resources available to entrepreneurs.

Course Information      

Team Management for Computing Professionals
Students will combine team management theory with practical project experience in this course. Teams will form early in the quarter, and immediately begin the study and practice of staged development and project team management. Direction is provided from lecture, The Software Project Survival Guide and Making the Team to address the employment of effective groups to contribute to the success of computing projects. Students will model their projects through the discovery, invention and implementation cycle while they learn and experience group dynamics, collaborative relationships, conflict management, and feedback.

HOW TO APPLY

Admission Requirements
Applicants should have a basic understanding of computing concepts, software applications, internet use, and the World Wide Web. This certificate program is geared toward students who are not anticipating a career in the computing sciences and information technologies, but who are likely to encounter and use Web-based technologies in their working life. Once accepted into a certificate program, you have one year within which to complete it.

Application Process
The 2007-2008 program begins in September 2007. Applications are now being accepted; qualified students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the program reaches enrollment, or before the first class. After this date, applications may be accepted on a space-available basis with instructor permission.

To apply you must submit one copy of the application form with a $50 non-refundable application fee and application set, to include:

  • Your résumé listing education and applicable experience and
  • A typed (250-word maximum) letter of application that demonstrates good written communication skills and describes your interest in and expectations of the certificate program.

Applications are evaluated by a review committee. Selection of program participants is based on admission requirements. The application fee does not guarantee admission to, or enrollment in, the program.

Applicants will receive written notification of their acceptance, placement on a waiting list, or non-acceptance after review of submitted materials. Accepted applicants will be sent registration information for the first-term courses.

Fees and Tuition
Tuition is payable on a term-by-term basis. Tuition for the entire program is $2685. Tuition does not include nonrefundable certificate program fee ($50), registration ($10/quarter) fees or textbooks. First-term tuition and fees are due 24 hours before the first class.

Refunds
Students must make a written request to withdraw. Written requests should be sent to UW Tacomapdctr@u.washington.edu or mailed to the KeyBank Professional Development Center, UW Tacoma, 1900 Commerce Street, Tacoma, WA 98402. Students withdrawing by 5 p.m. 24 hours BEFORE the program begins, are eligible for a full refund of all fees except the $50 application fee and $10 registration fee. There is no refund for withdrawals after the first day of class.

Earning the Certificate
Participants are evaluated in each course. Because courses are arranged sequentially, participants need to successfully complete classes in the previous term before they advance to the next term.
After successful program completion, participants earn a certificate which is presented at an annual UW Tacoma awards ceremony.
