Leadership in a Changing World – Certificate in Leadership Skills
Presented by G. Kent Nelson, Ph.D.

New dates have been posted, program will start on April 11, 2008.

Leadership in a Changing World emphasizes the knowledge and skills that managers need to become more effective and successful in their organizational roles. Workshops emphasize assessing leadership practices, dealing with conflict, creating powerful teams and developing effective interpersonal communication competency.

Participants awarded the certificate will:

  • Identify personal leadership practices through feedback and self discovery
  • Establish goals for improving leadership competency
  • Learn techniques for creating effective teams and team relationships
  • Plan and implement strategies for accomplishing individual and team goals
  • Develop strategies for leadership competence

In addition, participants will develop an action plan to increase leadership competency and enhance their performance in order to lead more effectively.

To receive the Certificate in Leadership Skills, participants must take all six sessions listed below.

There are six workshops in this series:

Challenge of Leadership

Explores the power and adventure of learning self-leadership; provides tools to assess your leadership practices; offers development opportunity to shape and control your behavior for leadership success. Focus on learning self-leadership before learning to become effective in leading others. Introduces the leadership assessment measure and focuses on the five practices of exemplary leaders: challenging the process, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way and encouraging the heart.

Inspiring a Shared Vision

Focuses on envisioning, understanding the role of intuition and values, developing relationships, and leading with a shared vision. You will examine your values, attitudes and behaviors and create a vision statement for personal and organizational application.

Challenging the Process

Focuses on searching out challenging opportunities to change, grow, innovate and improve. Designed to emphasize interpersonal communication competency and provide opportunities for you to learn supportive communication, communication styles, accuracy, coaching, diagnosing communication problems and fostering balanced interpersonal interactions. Helps you be more effective in working with peers, supervisors and clients.

Enabling Others to Act

Emphasizes analyzing conflicts and dealing with them proactively through fostering collaboration and strengthening others with negotiation and mediation. Key aspects of learning include the underlying psychological and sociological issues that make personal and organizational conflict challenging. Emphasis on skill building culminates in an interest-based negotiating exercise. Learn how to strengthen others and develop competence in collaborative relationships.

Modeling the Way

Focuses on creating powerful teams. Designed to explore interpersonal and management skills necessary to create and maintain effective teams that contribute to the success of an organization. Provides an opportunity for you to learn and experience interdependency, collaborative relationships, feedback, conflict management and goal setting within a team environment. Focuses on understanding how successful team performance can lead to productivity and effectiveness.

Reality of Leadership Challenges

Takes a realistic look at managers’ daily lives and the leadership challenges they face on a regular basis. Leadership challenges range from treating employees equitably to dealing with difficult people. This session culminates with participants creating leadership plans that integrate the issues presented in the series and identifying strategies for success.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

G. Kent Nelson, Ph.D.
Senior Lecturer in Management and Communication, Milgard School of Business, University of Washington Tacoma

G. Kent Nelson’s scholarly interests include informal and emergent forms of coordinated collective action, communication in mixed-status relationships, leadership, and interpersonal communication. He is actively involved in the community as a public speaker, facilitator and trainer. Nelson has a broad and varied background as a management/communication consultant to several prominent service organizations in the South Puget Sound, as well as multiple companies in the private sector.
