Summer Quarter 2009 News and Events
- Faculty Highlighted for Service
- July 2009- Dr. Marian S. Harris was unanimously selected by members of the Washington State Racial Disproportionality Advisory Committee to serve on the Child Welfare Transformation Design Committee, which was recently established by the Washington State Legislature in 2SHB 2106 and will assist the legislature and Governor Gregoire in implementing this legislation. This legislation was passed to improve outcomes for children and families in Washington State. Dr. Harris was also recently honored for her nomination as an Outstanding Advocate for Children in June 2009 via an award from the Children’s Alliance of Washington. In addition she was interviewed on July 10, 2009 by Noah Brode of NPR (WDUQ) in Pittsburg, PA regarding her presentation entitled “Disproportionality in Education and Employment Outcomes of Adult Foster Care Alumni.” The presentation was given at the Summer Institute, University of Pittsburg, School of Social Work, Center on Race and Social Policy. We congratulate Dr. Harris on her work and achievements.
- Honorable Mention goes to MSW Student
- June 2009- Congratulations go to Elisabeth Himmelman for winning an honorable mention paper award from the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work which supports clinical aspirations of students. Elisabeth has won a one year free membership to the Washington State Society of Clinical Social Work. Congratulations Elisabeth!
Spring Quarter 2009 News and Events
- BASW Student receives Fellowship
- April 2009-Kenny Bruemmmer(BASW '06; MSW candidate '09) is the recipient of the Interprofessional Fellowship in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery-oriented Services with the Veteran's Administration Palo Alto Health Care program. This highly competitive fellowship will give Kenny a year's continued study in chemical dependency recovery under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of recovery professionals. Congratulations to Kenny, both on his upcoming graduation and next year's fellowship. We're very proud of you!
- 2009 Faculty Highlighted for Service
- April 2009- Dr. Marian Harris a has been appointed to serve as a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Social Work Education from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2011 as well as the Editorial Board for the Smith College Studies in Social Work. In addition, she also received a Certificate of Recognition and Official Thank You Letter on March 2, 2009 from Mayor Bill Baarsma-City of Tacoma for her service as the Vice Chair of the Citizen Review Panel-Tacoma Police Department for the past two years. We congratulate Dr. Harris on her achievements.
Dr. Janice Laakso recipient of 2008-2009 Distinguished Teaching Award
March 2009-We are pleased to announce that Janice Laakso, Associate Professor for the Social Work Program is the recipient of the 2008-2009 Distinguished Teaching award. This honor was given to Dr. Laakso for the numerous ways in which her work and dedication has exemplified the qualities of excellence associated with this award. Congratulations to Dr. Laakso!
Editorial Board Appointment
March 2009-Congratulations go to Dr. Charles Emlet. He has recently been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work for the period of 2009-2012.

Winter Quarter 2009 News and Events
- Jacque DaCamara Endowed Student Support Fund
- Jan 2009—The Social Work Program of UW Tacoma would like to announce the establishment of the Jacque DaCamara Endowed Student Support Fund. This fund was established by Janice and John Laakso in memory of their cousin and close friend, Jacque DaCamara which will provide support for graduate or undergraduate students in the Social Work program at the University of Washington Tacoma.Both Janice and John Laakso are honored to promote the shared passion they had with Jacque DaCamara of politics, the political process and making a difference through advocacy with this endowment of $20,000. The endowment will first distribute funds in Spring of 2010 and anyone who would like to contribute to this fund may contact the Office of Advancement for further information.

This professional program offers a cohort model which effectively combines classroom and experiential learning preparing learners for generalist social work practice. - MSW Student brings experience to the Boys and Girls Club
- Jan 2009—Armando Mejia MSW student and alumni in the BASW program was recently featured in the Tacoma News Tribune for the work he is doing at the Boys and Girls club of South Puget Sound. We congratulate Armando on his success.
Autumn Quarter 2008 News and Events
- Gerontological Society of America Conference
Dec 2008—Professor Charles Emlet and MSW student Shakima Tozay attended the 61st Annual Gerontological Society of America Conference in November. There they presented their paper on the Resiliency and Strengths in the Lives of Older Adults Living with HIV/AIDS disease. Shakima who received a Founders endowment for her trip says it was a truly memorable experience and was happy she had the opportunity to attend.
- Influencing State Policy Award
December 2008—The five students who won the award for Influencing State Policy, were all able to attend the annual Program Meeting of Council of Social Work Education in Philadelphia. Vilma Algara, Rob Jones, Kashia Kelly, Tina Nguyen, and Honghda Sao all volunteered at the conference and accepted their award on Saturday evening, November 1st. In addition, they had a chance to meet the Dean of the School of Social Work for UW at the reception for UW Seattle and attend receptions of other schools where they could network with social work professionals. They and Janice Laakso, their faculty sponsor, were able to spend a morning in the historic district of Philadelphia to see Independendence Hall, the Liberty Hall, and many other historic sites.

- Oct 2008—The Social Work program would like to announce the approval of its new Minor in Criminal
Justice. The minor will begin winter quarter 2009. An exciting new program of
study, the minor represents our latest effort at serving the needs of the south puget

Summer Quarter 2008 News and Events
- Congratulations to BASW students
For the 5th straight year in a row a group of Social Welfare students have won the Influencing State Policy Contest. Congratulations go out to Rob Jones, Kashia Kelly,Vilma Algara, Tina Nguyen and Hongda Sao! Their work in lobbying for the HB 2688 to prohibit Department Of Corrections(DOC) from transferring an offender to an out-of-state facility if s/he was regularly participating in extended family visits with his/ her child or participating in extended family visits, participating in parent teacher conferences involving his/ her child, if the offender had 6 contacts in person with his/ her child within the last six months prior to the proposed transferl. Although, the bill did not pass the DOC decided to incorporate most if not all of these policy changes. We congratulate these students on their efforts and a for their hard work. They will be receiving prize money and an invitation to attend the awards ceremony at the Annual program meeting of the Council on Social Work Education in Philadelphia from October 29 to November 2, 2008.

- June 2008—Autumn quarter 2008 registration is now underway for continuing students. Registration for new students begins June 23 and after compliance with the Measels Immunity Verification process.
