During the admissions process, admission advisers in the Office of Admissions Advising and Outreach can help you match your interests to the appropriate program of study, assist you in successfully navigating the application process, and direct you to useful campus resources such as financial aid. They can also review your transcripts and let you know if additional coursework is necessary for admission.

Once admitted to an academic program, the academic adviser will assist you with your advising needs. You will be contacted by the Social Welfare Program adviser prior to your first quarter to set up a new student advising appointment. We recommend that you check in with your academic adviser at least once per quarter.

Two Types of Social Welfare Advising

Academic Advising

  • New student advising and orientation
  • Information about meeting admission deficiencies
  • Clarifying degree requirements
  • Approving transfer credits toward the degree
  • Planning and tracking progress in the degree
  • Evaluating your plan for graduation
  • Completing the paperwork necessary for graduation
  • Referrals to other resources (counseling, faculty, etc.)

Faculty Advising

  • Provide mentoring during coursework and independent studies
  • Provide counseling on educational and professional career choices
  • Provide assistance with personal difficulties affecting academic progress in the program
  • Provide referrals to campus or community resources
  • Help you articulate the link between your degree and your future goals, including:
    • Pathways to careers
    • Graduate study
