Problem: Steering ocean-going ships through Puget Sound's waterways safely into port can be difficult in Northwest weather conditions.

Solution:  Professor Larry Wear listened to ship pilots and Port of Tacoma leaders. Charles Bryan developed options for a navigation device that pilots can carry while climbing steep rope ladders in the toughest weather conditions.

Problem: Everyday tasks like choosing a CD can be challenging if you're blind.  

Solution: Kristen Shinohara used her technological knowledge to help make blind people's lives easier by developing design innovations. Josh Tenenberg, Kristen's professor, lent his expertise in human-computer interaction as her project adviser.

Problem: Identity theft affects 19 new people every minute and cybercrime generates more revenue than drug trade.

Solution: Students Mary Jane Kelly and Amalia Annest, leaders of UW Tacoma's Grey Hat Group, assembled a panel of experts and raised $10,000 to put on a two-day computer security conference that educated people about ways to protect themselves.
