Getting Help

If you have encountered a case of misconduct, please review these pages first. Contact Student Affairs if you have questions or need further assistance.

Before beginning each class, be sure you are familiar with the expectations of your professor concerning citations, sharing of materials, group work versus individual work, and other course requirements. Each professor may have slightly different expectations, and it is your responsibility to know what your professor requires.

If you are at all uncertain about what plagiarism means, and how to avoid it, we recommend that you visit the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC). They conduct periodic workshops on plagiarism and various styles (APA, MLA, etc.). Don't wait to be told that you are doing it wrong – the consequences can be dire even if you claim ignorance.

Many courses require extensive group work, but will ask students to turn in individual assignments. This can be confusing to students, so be sure that you clarify expectations with your faculty member and with your fellow students.

The notions of "original work", "academic integrity", "intellectual property", etc. can be confusing to someone who is not familiar with the culture and values in the American higher education system. Again, if you need some help, visit your instructor or the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC).
