Services for Students

The UW Tacoma Career Development Center provides quality services to assist undergraduate and graduate students, and alumni in developing and fulfilling their career objectives. We provide students and alumni with expertise, resources, and access to potential employers. Our services address the three stages of the career development process:

  • Self-assessment - discovery of individual strengths and talents;
  • Exploration of the world of work - applying self-knowledge to the discovery of career opportunities;
  • Search for employment or graduate school - integration of knowledge, experience, and skills toward successful professional growth and life beyond UWT.

Students and alumni will experience the career development cycle many times during their work lives, and the Career Development Center is available at each step in the process.

The following services are provided to all UWT students. Stop by our office at MAT 352 or explore our Web site to see how we can help you with all your career needs.

Assessments

Not sure where your degree might take you? We offer computerized assessments to help you identify career choices that best suit your interests, skills, values, and personality:

Washington Occupational Information Services (WOIS)
WOIS contains four self-assessments to assist you in determining your skills, interests, and values and help you choose an occupational interest area.
Dependable Strengths
Each person has a unique combination of core skills, abilities, qualities and traits that he or she enjoys using and can use easily. Identifying Dependable Strengths can lead to an education and career pathway that people will enjoy and do well. The six-step process includes:
  • Identifying many past good experiences
  • Selecting the top four good experiences
  • Completing the Strengths Chart
  • Identifying the Top Strengths
  • Determining a Career Pathway using the Top Strengths
  • Selecting occupations from the Career Pathway
The Internet version of Dependable Strengths is engaging and easy to use, and storage of data allows users to return to their work for further exploration or to make changes. This is one more tool to help students assess their skills and abilities as they relate to their career choices and options.
In addition to these assessments, our Web site contains links to many other self-assessment tools. We highly recommend meeting with a career counselor after completing any assessment.

Calendar of Events

Check our Calendar of Events often, as we update it frequently. Some of the events we include are:

Workshops
We offer workshops for UWT students throughout the year on various career topics.
Career Fairs/Recruitment Events
Besides the annual spring UWT Career Fair, we also include information about other career or recruitment events in the community.

Career Counseling and Advising

Meet with a Career Counselor to gain clarity and focus regarding your career direction! We can help you:

  • Make an informed career choice through a discussion of your values, interests, and goals.
  • Develop a job search strategy that is most effective for you.
  • Utilize our career assessments and other career resources.
  • Develop job and networking strategies.
  • Write effective and professional resumes, cover letters and other job search essentials.
  • Finesse your interviewing skills.

To make an appointment, contact us.

Career Peer Advising
Career Peer Advisers(CPA's) are undergraduate and graduate students, representing most UWT Academic Programs. CPA's are trained paraprofessionals available to assist current UWT students with certain parts of their career exploration.
CPA's will orient students to the Center, and help them get acquainted with all the resources and services that we provide. In addition, CPA's may hold half-hour sessions with students in any of the following areas:
  • Resume Critique
  • Internship and Job Search Logistics (How to Use Search Engines)
  • Scheduling Assessments and Appointments
  • Husky Job Club Information and Sign Up
  • Networking Tips
  • Resources Assistance (How to use our Career Resources)
CPA's have a wealth of information and are here to help current UWT students. However, CPA's do not counsel students, and will, at times, refer students to the Career Counselor. CPA's strongly recognize the scope of their expertise, and are always happy to schedule an appointment with the Career Counselor.

To access Vault on campus, go to the UWT library homepage and type in Vault Online Career Library in the search bar. Networking
Husky Career Network is a career networking program that offers UWT students and University of Washington Alumni Association members the opportunity to gain career information from one of the University of Washington's most valuable resources - its alumni.
