Students in Service is a program which gives students the opportunity to earn Education Awards (scholarships) by engaging in different types of service. The program can support a variety of engagement efforts, including:

  • Most volunteer work, including tutoring, mentoring, stream restoration, volunteer recruitment, and more!
  • Campus-based volunteer programs and general community service;
  • Academic and co-curricular Service-Learning;
  • Non-paid, academic internships with a service focus;
  • Practicum hours, such as nursing, counseling, environmental field work, and more!

Program Purpose:

The purposes of the program are to meet critical community needs by engaging higher education students in service, and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility. Through the program, students are introduced to local, regional, and national Service-Learning opportunities, resulting in a regional network of student leaders committed to serving and strengthening their local communities. Students serve in partnership with schools and community-based organizations in the areas of:

  • Education
  • Human Needs/Services
  • The Environment
  • Public Safety
  • Homeland Security.

Students in Service offers each student the opportunity to choose one of three terms of service. Upon successful completion of a term of service, students are eligible for an Education Award (scholarship), which can be applied towards outstanding student loans or the Cost of Attendance (tuition) at a college or university. The Education Award amount varies, depending on the term of service:

  • 300 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,000.00 Education Award (scholarship)
  • 450 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,250.00 Education Award (scholarship)
  • 900 Hour Term of Service = $ 2,362.50 Education Award (scholarship)

For more information, check out the Students in Service website external Web site.
