Health Insurance Coverage for Students
The University of Washington Tacoma has partnered with the Seattle and Bothell campuses to offer students a student insurance plan. Please read through the information provided below to see if one of the plans offered is right for you. You may view a "2007-2008 Student Accident and Sickness Insurance" brochure by utilizing the "Helpful links and Information" box on this page. Alternatively, you may visit Student Affairs (MAT 206), Student Life (MAT 108), Enrollment Services (GWP 102), or the Cashier's Office (MAT 354N) for a current brochure.

you can access information about the plan, its benefits, limitations, and enrollment procedures. While Student Affairs is pleased to provide information and answer any general questions you may have, you will need to contact the insurance company directly with any inquiries about specific coverage or enrollment. For your convenience we have provided some general information and access to several important links on this page to assist you in answering any questions that you may have. If you have additional questions please contact the Division of Student Affairs or the insurance company.
Changes from the 2006-2007 Plan
Rates and Prescriptions
The rates for the 2007-2008 plan have remained the same, however certain drug benefits have changed. Please read the plan carefully and contact The MEGA Life and Health Insurance Company
with any plan-specific questions.
Domestic Partnerships
Washignton State now has a domestic partnership law that became effective on Sunday July 22, 2007. This will effect enrollment in insurance plans. If you wish to enroll yourself and your same-sex Domestic Partner and/or your same-sex Domestic Partner's child(ren) in this plan, you must be registered in the Washington State domestic partnership registry
. When claims are submitted you will be asked to submit a copy of the Washington State domestic partnership registry. The Declaration of State Registered Partnership form
must be submitted in order to be on the registry.
Important Information about Enrollment Dates and Payment of Insurance Plans!!!!
Open enrollment for student insurance programs occurs during the first 7 days of each quarter. Plans can be purchased either on an annual or quarterly term (see below for specific 2007-2008 dates of coverage).You can access information about the plan, benefits, limitations, and enrollment procedures by utilizing the links on this page!
Dates the 2007-2008 Policy Is Effective
This is a one-year policy that begins on September 26, 2007 and ends on September 23, 2008. The benefits described in the 2007-2008 brochure are applicable during this term only.
Purchasing "Annual" Coverage
- If you purchase the "annual" coverage, you will be covered from the date listed below for the quarter in which you purchase the "annual" coverage and continuing until the end of this Policy Year (September 23, 2008).
Purchasing Quarterly Coverage
- If you purchase coverage quarterly, the quarterly policy terms are as follows:
- 2007 Autumn Quarter: September 26, 2007-January 7, 2008
- 2008 Winter Quarter: January 7, 2008-March 31, 2008
- 2008 Spring Quarter: March 31, 2008-June 23, 2008
- 2008 Summer Quarter: June 23, 2008-September 23, 2008
The individual student's coverage becomes effective on the first day of the quarter for which premium has been paid. Premium payments must be received within 7 days of the beginning of the quarter. No enrollments after the first 7 days will be allowed except in the case of a "Newly Acquired Dependent."
You must meet the eligibility requirements each time you pay a premium to continue insurance coverage. To avoid a lapse in coverage your premium must be received within 7 days after the coverage expiration date. It is the student's responsibility to make timely renewal payments to avoid a lapse in coverage. The policy is a non-renewable one year term policy.
Payment Information
UWT students are not eligible to pay for student insurance plans through MyUW, nor will the amount be deducted from your financial aid rewards automatically. You must enroll in a student insurance plan by visiting the insurance enrollment
section of the Student Resources website
. Questions regarding financial Aid disbursement should be directed to the UWT Financial Aid staff.
Important Information for Graduate Students
If you think you will be receiving a graduate appointment eligible for the Graduate Appointee Insurance Plan (GAIP)
before September 23, 2008, DO NOT PURCHASE the annual student insurance plan option. Rather, purchase the student insurance plan in quarterly installments only, since the annual plan premium cannot be refunded in whole or partially when you become eligible for the GAIP.
