2009 ASUWT Standing Committees

Standing committees are appointed by the President of ASUWT and confirmed by a majority vote of the Senate as noted in the bylaws.

Getting involved enhances your college experience by allowing you to interact and build relationships with your peers while also allowing you to shape the campus environment around you. By joining an ASUWT committee, you are able to better develop your understanding of the campus and how things work. Your time and involvement will aid us to more effectively represent and advocate the true wants and needs of UW Tacoma students. As a member of an ASUWT committee, your voice will be heard and you will have access to the resources and people to really make changes on this campus.

To join a committee, contact one of the chairs of that committee and they will answer any questions and help you to join that committee.

Student Technology Fee Committee

(STFC) is designed to provide and determine expenditures on improving existing technology and acquiring new technology to be used by the students of UW Tacoma. No maintenance or ongoing costs related to technology purchases will be allowed except in the case of service contacts approved at the time of the award. This committee is setup by ASUWT according to state laws (RCW 28B.15.05) and agreements made with the board of regents of the University of Washington, ASUWT bylaws, agreements made with the ASUW and ASUWB (Tri-campus agreement), and to the rules and guidelines established by the Open Public Meetings Act.

The STFC generally funds:

Responsibilities:

  1. The STFC shall allocate funds through a well-documented proposal process.
  2. STFC policies, which must establish that goods, services, and equipment acquired by STF funds are being used for the purposes for which they were approved, shall be published and posted publicly.
  3. The STFC shall report to the ASUWT senate monthly or as required by the senate.
  4. The STFC shall submit a written report to the ASUWT by the second week of May each year. This report shall reflect on a minimum, current funding status and important events during the quarter.

The STFC shall strive to increase general student awareness of STFC goals and the status of STFC expenditures.

Public Relations Committee

Public Relations (PR) is responsible for all of student government's communication to the campus community at the University of Washington, Tacoma. The Public Relations Committee also represents the Senate to entities such as the Ledger and campus Administration. Within the Public Relations Committee are two sub-committees, consisting of the Graduation Committee, which is responsible for specific parts of graduation such as nominating a commencement speaker and student singer/speaker, and the ASUWT Events Committee, which is responsible for planning a quarterly OPF as well as any other events the committee decides.

Legislative Affairs Committee

(L.A.C.) serves to keep the student government abreast about issues and laws coming before the local, state, and federal legislatures. In addition to this the LAC is responsible for scheduling law makers as special speakers for the campus community. The LAC has a student lobbyist whose job is to push for student interests in the legislature as determined necessary by the LAC. Lastly, the LAC is responsible for hosting the tri-campus committee, which is designed to keep open communication and dialogue between all three UW campuses (Tacoma, Bothell and Seattle). This committee is also involved in the recruitment and selection process surrounding the student regent, which is a position that is filled annually.

Initiatives and Concerns Committee

The role of the Initiatives and Concerns Committee (ICC) is to ensure the creation, expansion, and enhancement to new or existing programs as well as campus facilities. This committee also addresses any other student concerns that can be handled at the campus level as well as initiate facility improvements on the interiors and exteriors of campus facilities (i.e. student buildings/areas, landscaping, artwork, Fitness Center, Longshoreman's Hall, stairways, hallways, lounges, games, etc). The ICC maintains open lines of communication with the student body, Administration as well as off-campus community members to accomplish its goals.
