Declaring a major: Social Welfare

Admission prerequisites

Admission to the Social Welfare major is competitive. To be considered for admission to Social Welfare you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • 2.0 cumulative GPA in all college coursework.
  • 75 credits (including English composition) completed by time of enrollment in Social Welfare.
  • Minumum grade of 2.0 (or C) in each Social Welfare prerequisite course. (See course equivilancy table for UW Tacoma courses that meet these requirements.)
    • Introductory or survey course in psychology.
    • Introductory or survey course in sociology.
    • Introductory, survey, micro or macro course in economics.
    • Successful completion of an approved course in human biology or its equivalent.

Supplemental application materials

In addition to the Request to Declare/Change Major form Adobe PDF file , you must submit:

  • Social Welfare Program application
  • Admissions essay
  • Résumé
