Know the Rules

The following standards apply to all students enrolled in a degree program at the Institute of Technology. These standards may be in addition to other academic standards at the University of Washington Tacoma.

  1. Students must satisfactorily complete all upper-division courses at UW Tacoma by achieving a minimum grade of 1.7 (2.0 in all CSS/CES courses). If a grade below that is received, the student may repeat the course once with the approval of the program offering the course. *If the student does not successfully pass the course with a minimum grade of 2.0 on the second try and wishes to take the course for a third time, the student must complete the Petition to retake a Course form and submit it along with supporting documentation to the Program Adviser in Pinkerton 2nd floor. The student will be notified of the faculty's decision as soon as it is known. Course credit will be awarded only once, and both grades will be used in computing the grade-point average. If a grade below 1.7 is received in an elective course outside of major, the course will not count toward graduation, but the student is not required to repeat the course.
  2. All prerequisites must be completed before advancing to the next academic level. All courses within the major must be completed with a minimum grade of 2.0 (including TCSS 142 and 143). Advanced concentration courses build upon knowledge gained in the core courses. Students are strongly encouraged to complete as many of the major core classes as possible before progressing to more advanced concentration courses.
  3. Courses in the CSS and CES programs may not be taken by correspondence (distance learning) without prior approval of the program.
  4. Courses in the CSS and CES programs may not be taken S/NS (satisfactory/not satisfactory).
  5. To substitute for a course in the major, upper-division CSS or CES courses completed at other accredited four-year institutions may not be more than seven years old. If a course is more than seven years old, the student will be required to repeat the course at UW Tacoma. Credit will not be awarded twice for the same course. To request a course substitution, the student must submit the Petition to Substitute a Course form and submit it along with supporting documentation to the Program Adviser in Pinkerton 2nd floor. The student will be notified of the faculty's decision as soon as it is known.
  6. Upper-division courses used for transfer credit are held to the 2.0 grade standard required for all courses for CSS and CES degree programs.
  7. Students changing to the CSS or CES major from another major will be required to meet program and academic performance requirements in effect at the time the major is changed. Students who wish to change their major must complete the Change of Major form and follow the instructions found online here.
  8. Students may enroll in 1 400-level TINST course to count as a CSS elective.
  9. Students may enroll in 500 level electives to count for their CSS electives. The following restrictions apply:
    • Students may not enroll in the Bridge Courses: TCSS 522, TCSS 545, TCSS 560, TCSS 572
    • Students may not enroll in the Core Course: TCSS 598
  • Students wishing to enroll in a 500 level elective, must follow these procedures:
    1. Student must have completed the core curriculum
    2. Student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their major
    3. Student must have instructor's permission
    4. Student must have faculty adviser permission

Removal from Program

An undergraduate CSS or CES major, who is dismissed from the University for Low Scholarship, is removed from the CSS or CES major. A letter of dismissal is sent to the student.

Students removed from the Institute of Technology who wish to re-enter the program must re-apply for admission. The Institute of Technology Admissions Committee evaluates the student's file, statement requesting re-admission and any extenuating circumstances, and then recommends action.
