On Leave Status
Maintaining graduate status and good academic standing
To maintain graduate status, a graduate student must be continuously enrolled on a full-time, part-time or on-leave basis from the time of first enrollment in the UW Graduate School until completion of all requirements for the MS CSS degree. Failure to maintain continuous enrollment constitutes evidence that the student has resigned from the Graduate School and the Institute of Technology MS CSS Program.
On-leave status may be granted on an individual basis. Students must meet with the MS CSS adviser for further information about the on-leave process, obtain the Petition for On-Leave form before the third day of the quarter in which they wish to go on-leave, or to inquire about seeking readmission for failing to maintain continuous enrollment. The Graduate School Memorandum No. 9 covers the on-leave status to maintain graduate status.
To be in good academic standing, graduate students must maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 for all 400 and 500-level graded courses taken after attaining graduate status at the University of Washington.

Meet the Deadline
A student's Petition for On-Leave Status must be approved by the director of the program and submitted no later than the tenth day of the quarter. If a student fails to maintain graduate status and wishes later to resume studies, s/he must file an application for readmission to the Graduate School by the published dates.
Follow the Steps
- Obtain a Petition for On-Leave Status from the Graduate Program Adviser located in Pinkerton 2nd floor. Please come during walk-in hours or make an appointment.
- Complete all sections of the form and submit it to the UWT Cashier's Office in MAT 354 with a $35 payment (cash, personal checks or money orders only) payable to: University of Washington.
- If you have registered for any portion of a quarter, remember to withdraw from classes to avoid liability for tuition and fees. Check the current Registration Guide for drop dates.
To Return From On-Leave Status
Graduate students who are on leave are eligible to register for the quarter immediately following the expiration of the on-leave period, or any quarter during the leave period, without having to file a Returning Student Reenrollment Form.
