Q: Does the applying student need to have completed a grade between 6th and 11th at the end of the school year just before summer session begins?

A: Yes. The MSL Program is a preparatory program for student who will be entering the 7th through 12th grades in the following academic year.

Q: As a family — do we have to meet all three criteria areas (e.g., low income, first generation college student, member of a group that has historically been under represented in STEM fields)?

A: No. All families are encouraged to apply.

Q: What are you looking for in applications?

A: From a holistic perspective, the program thrives when students and family members are comprised on the most diversified members

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Every admitted student receives a full scholarship that covers the expenses of the program.

Q: What options are available for transportation?

A: UW Tacoma is located in the heart of downtown Tacoma. The FREE Link travels between the Tacoma Dome parking/transit center and 9th & Commerce. Also, Pierce Transit has a wonderful and easy to use bus system. A third option is to connect with other MSL Family Members and carpool.

Q: How will students be different after this four-week experience?

A: Based on survey data from previous years’ attendees, student levels in all of the following areas increased significantly:

  • Self-Confidence
  • Problem Solving
  • Critical Thinking
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Responsibility
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Motivation

In addition, students are more likely to choose math, science and leadership electives or roles during the school year as a direct result of their experience with The MSL Program. For more detailed information, see Program Details and the fact sheet.

Q: How many Summer Sessions are there?

A: There is one, four-week session offered on a yearly basis. Summer Session is always the last two weeks of July and first two weeks of August.

Q: Does the applying student have to begin the MSL program in 7th grade?

A: No. Students can, upon acceptance, begin the program by enrolling in whatever grade the student will be entering in the following academic year.

Q: Can I bring my lunch during Summer Session?

A: No. One of the program’s values is equality. All students are offered breakfast, a morning snack, lunch and an afternoon snack every day they are in attendance of Summer Session.

Q: Can I be in TIP without being in MSL?

A: No. TIP is simply one piece of the 11th grade curriculum, in MSL. The two (TIP and MSL) are not separate programs.
