Instructors

MSL 2008 Instructional Team
The MSL 2008 Instructional Team.

The MSL Program hires an instructional team, consisting of 12 members, on a yearly basis. Members of the instructional team play a pivotal role in influencing the lives of MSLers. Instructors are interviewed, trained and will work closely and collaboratively within a twelve-member instructional team environment. Successful applicants must have knowledge in all levels of mathematics from remedial through college level intermediate algebra, preferably through calculus. The ability to teach students from a strengths-based perspective and experience using alternate teaching methods is an absolute requirement.

Applicants must be willing and able to work with a variety of textbooks and curricula. The MSL Program utilizes a student-focused method of teaching mathematics and science through problem solving, formal modeling, application and inquiry-based learning. MSL instructors should be comfortable with problem solving and various scientific processes.

Family Members

Part of what makes The MSL Program such a huge success is family member involvement. Family is defined by differently by many people. Some consider a family to be a student and the student’s aunt and uncle. A family could also be defined as a student, the student’s mother, and four neighbors. The program appreciates and respects all of these definitions. You are invited to be involved with any aspect of the program. Listed below are some examples of ways that previous years’ family members contributed:

  • Fieldtrip Chaperone
  • Checking-in with student @ end of day
  • Labeling Newsletters
  • Panel Discussant
  • Guest Lecturer
  • TIP Agency Partner
  • Making Lunches
  • Classroom Support

The Internship Program (TIP)

One way of increasing student exposure to STEM fields is by allowing a space where students can gain hands-on experience of working with someone in the field. One portion of the 11th grade curriculum is an internship experience.

Students spend a total of 20 hours, over the course of four-weeks, exploring a particular aspect of their designated agency.

A new and exciting community partnership has been created between Tacoma Community House (TCH) and MSL. For more information on TCH, see their website.

Are you an agency looking to get involved with TIP?

It’s simple. Answer this question:

Do you have 2.5 hours on both Tuesday and Thursday, from July 20 to August 12, to devote to mentoring an 11th grade student?

If you answered yes to this question, then please contact The MSL Program to arrange a site visit.
