Program Details
The MSL Program takes a two-pronged approach toward student success:
Summer Program
The MSL Program uses integrated curriculum that prepares students for life-long learning. Integrated education replaces the acquisition of discrete, compartmentalized subject matter with an approach to learning that cuts across disciplines, providing a process for developing skills and abilities. Learning and teaching are done in a holistic way and reflects the real world, which is interactive. We have a strong emphasis on projects, but a firm foundation in the fundamentals. The summer portion of the program has three main focal areas: math, science and leadership.

Over-arching themes are grade-specific. Students (the grade in which one will be entering during the 2008-09 academic year) will work in one of the following:
| Grade | Over-arching Theme |
|---|---|
| 7 | Environmental Technology |
| 8 | Robotics Engineering |
| 9 | Urban Design |
| 10 | Local Citizenry: Service Learning |
| 11 | College Bound |
| 12 | Global Citizenry: Paying Forward |
School Year Reunions
While a total of 160 hours are spent during the summer component of The MSL Program, we also find that integral to the overall success of our students is maintaining connections to other MSLers throughout the remainder of the year.
Once a month, we gather either on the UW Tacoma campus or in the greater Tacoma community to explore one of MSL's values. To view a schedule of the 2007-08 reunions, please click here.
Another purpose for meeting monthly is to check in with students' academic progress. Students are required, upon admittance to the program, to submit copies of their report cards when issued (typically, once per quarter).
