Java Programming Assessments

Java Programming and You!

Newly admitted CSS students will begin their programming coursework in either TCSS 142 (Intro. to Object Oriented Programming), TCSS 143 (Foundations of Object Oriented Programming), or TCSS 305 (Programming Practicum). Students with minimal programming experience, or who feel they would benefit by a review of basic concepts, should begin in TCSS 142. Students who have taken the equivalent of TCSS 142 and who are confident in their mastery of the course material will likely begin in TCSS 143. Students who have taken the equivalent of TCSS 143 and who are confident in their understanding of object oriented programming concepts and techniques will likely begin in TCSS 305.

Why should I take an Assessment?

  • It is important for you to know the level of knowledge required to progress to the next programming course.
  • We want you to place yourself in the appropriate programming class.
  • We want you to be successful as you continue through the program.

To help students make an informed decision about where to begin, the following self-assessment exams have been provided. Students who have taken the equivalent of TCSS 142 should take the TCSS 143 assessment test to verify their mastery of the required prerequisite knowledge. Likewise, students who have taken the equivalent of TCSS 143 should take the TCSS 305 assessment test.

Please make sure to take your time and allow yourself up to 1 hour. This assessment will only be of value if you make an HONEST effort.

After you take the exam, it is recommended that you meet with an Undergraduate Advisor to discuss the results. Please contact the Institute of Technology to make an appointment.
