Collecting Student Feedback Using the Small Group Instructional Diagnosis
(SGID)
This session will demonstrate how to collect, interpret, and respond to
student feedback using the Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID).
The SGID is an open-ended, mid-course oral interview in which students
discuss their perceptions of the effectiveness of a course, including both its
strengths and potential areas for change. The SGID allows an instructor to:
- Provide students with an open-ended forum to identify concerns that they
think are most important
- Let students relay their feedback confidentially through a neutral third
party
- Discover student perspectives on the course and make changes, address
misunderstandings, or clarify policies before the course is over
- Receive more in-depth student feedback than end-of-quarter students
evaluations typically provide
Student and instructor response to the SGID process has been outstanding.
Students appreciate the midterm timing, which provides opportunity for changes
to affect them, and the heightened teacher awareness of student perceptions.
Instructors appreciate having more in-depth information about how students are
experiencing their class, and also having the opportunity to exchange ideas
with a colleague about best ways to respond to student perceptions.
