Learning strategies for Math
Here are a few ideas for how to make your studying more pleasant and efficient. Try at least some of them. And don't forget: Everything is easier if we approach it with a positive attitude!
- Be relaxed and comfortable while studying.
- Make sure you attend every class.
- You are held responsible for material covered in classes that you have missed.
- Copy all the information that is written on the board.
- Ask questions in class.
- Math is learned by doing problems. Do the homework.
- Schedule a study period after your math class.
- Take as much time as you need to do all the homework and to get complete understanding of the material.
- During a study take a short break every 30 min.
- While doing homework, write down questions for the instructor / tutor.
- When you go to office hours, your study group or a tutor, have a specific list of questions prepared in advance.
- Make note cards to remind yourself how to solve various math problems.
- Get help early before you get lost.
- Do not allow yourself to become dependent on a tutor. The tutor cannot take the exams for you.
- Take responsibility for studying, recognizing what you do and don't know.
- Learn how to relax before tests are taken.
- Develop responsibility for your own successes and failures.
