FAQs

Description of Services

Our On-line Center focuses primarily on writing-related needs, such as citation, feedback on a draft, help getting started and formulating an introduction or thesis statement. We can also help identify patterns of mechanical or grammatical error. We use the same collaborative process that we use for in-person consultations; the writer determines his/her priorities for the consultation.

On-line consultations are most successful when the client provides the parameters of the assignment or project upon which he/she is working, as well as limited, specific questions regarding his/her work. Consultations are less successful when the client asks the consultant to check flow, citation, grammar, mechanics, style and logic. Not all of these needs can be met in one conference, nor is The Center a personal editing service. Our goal is to help writers to become more sophisticated, confident, and effective writers.

FAQs

How does an on-line conference work?

Using your UWT email account, send us an email with your questions and/or a draft of your project (e.g. research paper, scholarship letter, presentation, etc.). You will receive an automated response from The Center so that you will know we have received your request. The automated response will also ask you for your name, academic program, course, assignment description and criteria, and your focused, specific priorities for the consultation – in case you forgot to include them. Including this information in your initial email will expedite your request.

Our goal is to respond within 24-72 hours upon receiving your request. During our regular hours of operation, a TLC consultant will respond to your message, asking additional questions or offering ideas on the questions you have asked. (Our consultants are on duty from 9 am – 7 pm, Monday through Thursday, 9 am - 3 pm Friday and 4 pm – 8 pm Sunday evenings). No on-line consultations are held outside of these hours. So, if you send a request for feedback on a Friday at midnight, the earliest you will receive a response is Sunday evening, dependant upon where you are in the queue. Only a portion of our operating hours are scheduled for email.

See our additional appointment times.

How do I send questions or a draft?

If you just have a quick question about format, punctuation, etc., you can email your question to uwtwrite@u.washington.edu Be sure to use your UWT email account.

If you have a draft or a partial draft, please send it as a Microsoft Word attachment, along with the parameters of your assignment and your questions, to uwtwrite@u.washington.edu Be sure to use your UWT email account.

How long does it take to get a response back?

Monday through Friday, we attempt to answer your requests within 24-72 hours, during our regular hours of operation. The on-line center is very busy during mid-terms and finals resulting in a slower response time. The on-line center is closed from Friday at 3pm through Sunday at 4pm. On Sundays, from 4pm--8pm, requests are answered in the order in which they are received.

Can I use another email account, such as hotmail?

No. Using other email accounts and forwarding devices often results in lost work. As a student at UWT, you are required to have and use your UW email account to facilitate communication.

Can I have an appointment in the TLC and use uwtwrite on the same day?

No, students may have up to 1 hour of writing consultation per day, which includes scheduled appointments, drop-in, and the On-line Writing Center.
