How to Apply

  1. Fill out the attached application form (in PDF format) and include a check. A $200 deposit is required at the time of application. See Refund Conditions, below.
  2. Submit transcripts of your studies during the past two years. If you are a UW student, you may submit a xerox of your transcript. If you are asking for transcripts from another university of college, please contact them for information about how to have an official transcript sent to us. Student services at UW will NOT provide us with copies of transcripts from other schools. It is your responsibility to see that transcripts are sent to us.

Application Deadline

The application deadline has been extended and is open until further notice. You must enclose a $200 deposit at the time of application or we will not consider you for the program. Program applicants should be notified of acceptance or denial by January 30, 2004. If you are not accepted into the program, you $200 deposit will be refunded.

Insurance

Health insurance coverage is mandatory. Students in University of Washington degree program may purchase UW student insurance or other coverage; others must provide their own insurance, and provide proof of insurance coverage at time of application. For more information, see http://www.ipe.washington.edu/students/before.php or telephone 206-543-3419.

Financial Aid

Students receiving financial aid funds which they intend to apply toward the program cost should consult with the Financial Aid office in Student Affairs as soon as possible. Be aware that you may not receive financial aid in time to cover the $200 application fee and the first payment of $700. You should be prepared to pay these fees out of pocket until your financial aid check arrives. Deadlines for payments cannot be waived or postponed.

Schedule of Program Payments

  Amount Due
Deposit $200 at time of application
1st Payment $700 February 9, 2004
2nd Payment $1,200 March 3, 2004
Total $2,100

This payment schedule applies to the program fees. All other expenses, including tuition, travel documents, textbooks, and UW student insurance are the personal responsibility of the student. All students are expected to make payments according to the following schedule. In the case of financial aid support students must work with the Financial Aid office. The program fee is paid directly to the University of Washington, Tacoma, and should be sent to UWT Cuba Program, at the address below. Make check out to "University of Washington, Tacoma" and write "UWT Cuba Program" in the Memo field. Tuition payments are made to the cashier's office on the Tacoma campus.

Refund Conditions

Payment of the application fee does not guarantee admission to the program. Admission will be competitive, based on the criteria outlined in the "Student Eligibility" section above. If you are not accepted to the program, the $200 deposit will be refunded with a refund check. If you withdraw prior to January 28, the deposit will be refunded. Any student withdrawing after January 28 will be liable for any non-recoverable payments already made or committed on behalf of the participant, which could range from $500 to the entire program fee. Notice of withdrawal from the program must be made in writing to the UWT Cuba Program at the address below.

Changes in Cost or Scope of Program

In the event of significant changes in the cost of airfare and lodging, some adjustments to program fees may be necessary. In addition, scheduled activities may vary slightly depending on the availability of Cuban scholars and guides. If such changes occur, students will be notified and options for the students will be given.

Program Cancellation

If viable enrollment is not reached by February 12, the program will be cancelled and all money paid in, including the $200 deposit, will be refunded. As soon as viable enrollment is reached, participants will be notified by e mail. You should also be aware that the United States government can prohibit us from legal travel to Cuba should the political climate between our governments suddenly change. In the event of government prohibition, the program will be cancelled and all money paid in, including the $200 deposit, will be refunded.
