General Program Information & Course Overview
The Urban Field Experience course was started in 2001 by Professor Brian Coffey and will be offered for the 3rd year during Summer 2004 quarter. Some preparation/planning is required of the students during Winter/Spring quarters.  The field course is kept to a small group (12-15) to enhance the learning experience.  This gives each student more chances to participate, lead, learn, contemplate, and celebrate the richness of the region more than in would be possible in a typical in-class setting. This year the course will be taught by Assistant Professor Yonn Dierwechter, (yonn@u.washington.edu, 253-692-4504).  Keep in mind that the course is 12 credits packaged in a 4 week class.  Therefore, it will be very time intensive while you are there.  In addition, there will be a lot of walking to get from point to point where transportation is not readily available.

This course will be based in Leiden, The Netherlands and several excursions in and around the region will take place.  A special 3-4 day trip to Paris to explore major global and cultural metropole.

The Field Experience goals are to provide a hands-on opportunity to directly observe various urban areas with respect to their geography, history, architecture, art/culture, government, commerce (ports), etc b) participate in small group discussions led by various local experts in their respective fields, and c) give students an active role in preparing/researching one field trip located in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam region.

Students applying for the Urban Studies Summer Field Experience are strongly encouraged to take The Urban Condition (T URB 301), Urban Society & Culture (T URB 310), or any course relating to urban geography, planning, society, and sustainability.

The course will run July 2-27, 2004 and there will be several mandatory meetings scheduled during Winter and Spring 2004 term during which students will be given assignments they need to start working on for the program.  Remember this is a 12 credit course and will be very time intensive.  All participants must have a passport valid for the duration of the program. It may take as long as six weeks to obtain or renew a passport.

Eligibility
Undergraduate and graduate students at any UW campus may apply. Participants are selected on the basis of academic preparation, scholarship, motivation, and financial responsibility. A maximum of 12 students will be accepted. Tacoma-campus Urban Studies majors may count a total of 12 field course credits toward the 'core elective' requirement of the degree.  UW Seattle Geography majors may count a total of 5 credits toward the 60 credits required for the major. Field course credits are treated in the same manner as internship or independent study in that only 5 such credits TOTAL may be applied to the major.  Always consult with your academic adviser for placement of credits toward your major. Other majors not mentioned must check with their academic adviser for placement of such credits.  This course cannot be taken on a tuition exemption basis.

The University of Washington provides equal opportunity in education without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age or disability in accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title IX of the Education Amendments, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, and University of Washington policy. Students who are citizens of countries other than the United States must check with the office that issued their U.S. visa to determine if they are permitted to travel as part of this program.

Course & Credits
Students will receive 12 quarter credits in the Urban Studies program  for T URB 379,  Urban Studies Field Experience.

Catalog Course Description:
Designed as a field course to be offered during the summer. Based in a city sufficiently different from the Tacoma metropolitan area to expose students to a distinct “urban laboratory.”  These differences will revolve around city size/structure in that major metropolitan centers will be selected as sites for the course.  In addition, cultural differences will be a consideration in that many of the offerings will be in foreign cities. Examples of anticipated locales are New York, Mexico City, London, and Amsterdam.  Course content will vary depending on the destination.  The course is part of the newly developed Urban Studies program and is intended to enhance students’ perspectives on urbanism through an experience that provides an in-depth look at a global city.  It's intended to increase students’ ability to critically assess urban issues and problems through direct observation/experience.  Further, through interaction with experts from the local area, the course is designed to acquaint students with the techniques practitioners use to address urban issues.
