Dutch flagHolland: Urban Field Experience

Introduction

This course will be based in Holland with a special 3-4 day excursion to Berlin. Students will live in the historic center of Leiden (or Utrecht), with fieldtrips via train to several Dutch cities. The field-based course explores spatial, architectural, historical, cultural, social, economic and political dimensions of urban dynamics in contemporary Europe

Academic work will include background readings, a daily journal, group research projects, and papers.

Students will receive 12 credits for T URB 379, Urban Studies Field Experience. UWT Urban Studies majors may count a total of 12 field course credits toward the 'core elective' requirement of the degree. Other majors must check with their academic adviser for placement of credits within their degree program.

Student Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate students from any UW campus may apply. Participants are selected on the basis of academic preparation, scholarship, motivation, and financial responsibility. A maximum of 15 students will be accepted, and preference will be given to UWT Urban Studies majors, minors, or students from other fields who have completed coursework in the area of urban studies.

Program Schedule

Subject to change, the travel schedule is currently:

  • July 1 - Leave Sea-Tac
  • July 2 - Arrive in Amsterdam
  • July 4-27 - Program Dates
  • July 27 - Free to leave (afternoon)

The program also involves mandatory meetings in April and June, and follow-up sessions in August to allow for presentations of student research.

Travel Documents

All program participants must have a valid passport in order to travel to the Netherlands and Germany. No visa or other paperwork is required.

Application Deadline

To insure consideration, apply by March 15, 2006. Applications will be accepted until program is full.

Program Fees

The total program fee of $3,000 is divided into the academic course fee and travel fee. Travel fees are paid to UW Tacoma according to the payment schedule below. The academic course fee will be charged to participants' UW student account and paid the same way as tuition. This includes a $100 non-refundable administrative fee charged by UW Tacoma International Programs. Travel payments may be made with a personal check, money order, certified or cashier's check payable to University of Washington, Tacoma (UWT). Write "Holland Summer 2006" in the memo line of the check.

  • Housing
  • Berlin excursion
  • Ground transportation

Not Included in Program Fees:

  • Airfare
  • Health/travel insurance
  • Meals
  • Personal spending money

*Academic course fee of $1,700 (in lieu of tuition) is due July 7, 2006 (tuition due date for Summer Quarter 2006). Academic course fee is subject to change due to various factors such as currency fluctuation and UW tuition increases.

Refund Conditions for Fees

  1. If you are not accepted to the program, the deposit will be refunded.
  2. If you are accepted and withdraw in writing prior to April 15, 2006 the deposit will be refunded.
  3. Thereafter, you will forfeit the deposit plus any non-recoverable payments already made or committed on your behalf. No refunds will be given for unused accommodations, meals or other fees and services.

Changes in Costs or Scope of the Program

In the event of significant devaluations of the dollar, some adjustments to program activities may be necessary. If there are any political events that might compromise the safety of the participants, a rescheduling or cancellation of the program may be necessary. If such changes occur, students will be notified of the changes and options will be presented.

Program Cancellation

If viable enrollment is not reached by May 1, 2006, the program will be cancelled and all recoverable monies paid in will be refunded.
