Buenos Aires, Argentina: Tour Information
Introduction
The UWT program in Buenos Aires, Argentina is a full-quarter intensive immersion program comprised of three parts: Spanish language instruction, theoretical/content based instruction in human rights, and a practicum component. Students will travel to Buenos Aires with UWT faculty member Dr. Rachel May, and will study at the Asociación Internacional de Estudios (AIE). Practicum placements will be made through AIE's partner organizations, placing students as volunteers with the NGO of their choice.
Students will improve language and cultural competencies by living and working in Buenos Aires while receiving language instruction. In addition, students will gain expertise in the study and practice of human rights in Latin America, specifically Argentina. Students will take away from the program a general knowledge of the history and practice of human rights in Argentina, as well as a more focused expertise in a related topic which students will choose to research and present in a substantial final project (15-20 pages).
Academic Content
Students will receive 15 credits as follows:
- 5 credits for Human Rights in Latin America (UWT course prefix and number TBA pending curriculum approval)
- 5 credits for TSPAN 199, 299 or 393, to be determined upon completion of the program, depending on previous language background.
- 5 credits for TIAS 496: Internship (CR/NC)
Tacoma campus students pursuing the minor in Human Rights may apply 10 of the 15 credits towards the minor. Students pursuing other major and minor programs should talk with their academic adviser to determine placement of credits within their program. Students from the Seattle or Bothell campuses will concurrently register through International Programs & Exchanges, and should also talk with their academic adviser to determine where these credits will apply toward their degree.
Student Eligibility
Undergraduate and graduate students from any UW campus may apply. Participants are selected on the basis of high scholarship, academic preparation, motivation, emotional maturity, and financial responsibility.
