Groningen: Info for Outgoing UW Students

Introduction

This UWT exchange program is is open to UW junios in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or better) from any academic program or campus. Any eligible student can apply to spend one term studying at the University of Groningehn, in Groningen, The Netherlands. The exchange program accepts students every Autumn and Winter quarter.

Subjects of Study

Courses are within the Faculty (department) of Spatial Sciences. All courses are taught in English. Should you have an interest in courses in a specific or other field (e.g., Arts, Psychology, Economics, Management & Organization, Law), contact Paul van Steen and explain your interests and he can then look for course options in other Faculties that might be available for you. Courses

All exchange students are required to take Spatial Problems & Policies for 10 ECTS credits. Additional course(s) can be taken upon request.

Credits

ECTS = European credits
1.5 ECTS = 1 Dutch credit = 40 hours of study
12 ECTS = 10 UW credits

UW vs. RuG Schedules

Please note that the University of Groningen schedule is significantly different from that of the University of Washington. UW students travelling to Groningen for Autumn Quarter depart significantly earlier than the UW late-September start. UW students interested in studying in Groningen for Winter Quarter should realize that they may not be able to participate in Spring Quarter classes at UW due to the schools' overlapping schedules.

Costs

Academic course fee is charged to participants' UW student accounts, and is paid the same way as tuition. Course fee is approximately equivalent to the appropriate 12-credit tuition rate for the quarter in which you are participating in the exchange program.

Application Forms and Deadlines

Print and complete the Application Form, then submit your completed Application Packet (except for the Recommendation Forms discussed below) to the International Programs office following the instructions on the form.

You will need to print two copies of this form; one for each recommender. Fill in your personal information, then forward it to each recommender, who will then forward the completed form directly to the International Programs office. Please allow at least 2 weeks for the recommender to complete this form.

Winter Quarter 2009: September 1, 2008

Housing Abroad

Housing is in international student dorms or apartments. The housing application is required at least 2 months prior to arrival. A deposit is due when confirmation of housing is received. For more information, visit the Groningen Housing Office website.
