China: Overview

Introduction

This program provides UW students the opportunity to study language, culture and history at Peking University. The program features a well-designed combination of on-campus study and cultural tours. The 2008 program features the theme of culture vs. nature, with the cross-country trip of Yangtzu River and Three Gorges.

Academic Content

Students will earn 15 credits for TSMIN 480: Language and Culture of China (VLPA/I&S). If preferred, students can instead earn credit for Chinese language courses, with faculty approval. UW students will travel with Tacoma Community College students, and the group will be led by Dr. Yi Li, TCC faculty member. Program content in China includes:

  • 45 hours of intensive Chinese language classes
  • 6-8 seminars on Chinese history and culture
  • 4-5 cultural trips in and around Beijing
  • cross-country trip

Student Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate students from any UW campus may apply. Participants are selected on the basis of high scholarship, academic preparation, motivation, emotional maturity, and financial responsibility.

Housing and Accommodations

Double-occupancy housing in Peking University international student dorms is included in the program fee. Single-occupancy housing is available for an extra fee.

Costs

The cost of the program is $4,800. The program fee includes:

  • course fee (in lieu of tuition) for 15 UW credits
  • instructional costs in China
  • lodging (double occupancy) in PKU international student dorms or guest-house
  • ground transportation in/around Beijing, including airport pickup/dropoff
  • museum entry fees
  • meals during cross-country tour
  • orientation dinner and graduation banquet

It does not include:

  • round trip airfare to/from China
  • costs of travel documents (passport, visas)
  • meals (except as listed above)
  • personal expenses
  • single-occupancy on-campus lodging (available for extra fee if desired)

*Academic course fee (in lieu of tuition) is due July 11, 2008 (tuition due date for Summer Quarter 2008). Academic course fee is subject to change due to various factors such as currency fluctuation and UW tuition increases.

Refund Conditions for Fees

  1. If you are not accepted to the program, the entire $200 deposit will be refunded.
  2. If you are accepted and withdraw in writing prior to May 15, 2008 the deposit will be refunded.
  3. Thereafter, you will forfeit the deposit plus any non-recoverable payments already made or committed on behalf of the participant. No refunds will be given for unused accommodations, meals or other fees and services.

Changes in Costs or Scope of the Program

In the event of significant devaluations of the dollar, some adjustments to program activities may be necessary. If there are any political events that might compromise the safety of the participants, a rescheduling or cancellation of the program may be necessary. If such changes occur, students will be notified of the changes and options will be presented.

Program Cancellation

If viable enrollment is not reached by May 15, 2008, the program will be cancelled and all recoverable monies paid in will be refunded.
