Dutch flagHolland: Tour Information

Introduction

This course will be based in Holland with a special 3-4 day excursion to Berlin. Students will live in the historic center of Leiden (or Utrecht), with fieldtrips via train to several Dutch cities. The field-based course explores spatial, architectural, historical, cultural, social, economic and political dimensions of urban dynamics in contemporary Europe

Academic work will include background readings, a daily journal, group research projects, and papers.

Students will receive 12 credits for T URB 379, Urban Studies Field Experience. UWT Urban Studies majors may count a total of 12 field course credits toward the 'core elective' requirement of the degree. Other majors must check with their academic adviser for placement of credits within their degree program.

Student Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate students from any UW campus may apply. Participants are selected on the basis of academic preparation, scholarship, motivation, and financial responsibility. A maximum of 15 students will be accepted, and preference will be given to UWT Urban Studies majors, minors, or students from other fields who have completed coursework in the area of urban studies.

Program Schedule

Subject to change, the travel schedule is currently:

  • July 4 - Leave Sea-Tac
  • July 5 - Arrive in Utrecht; check-in to housing after 12pm
  • July 16-20 - Berlin excursion
  • July 28 - Wrap up/discussion of projects
  • July 29 - Free to leave

The program also involves mandatory meetings in April and June, and follow-up sessions in August to allow for presentations of student research.

Travel Documents

All program participants must have a valid passport in order to travel to the Netherlands and Germany. No visa or other paperwork is required for U.S. citizens.

Application Deadline

Priority application deadline was March 15, 2008, but applications are still being accepted.

Program Fees

The total program fee is $3,800. Fees are divided into the academic course fee and the travel fee. Travel fees are paid to UW Tacoma according to the payment schedule below. The academic course fee will be charged to participants' UW student account and paid the same way as tuition. This includes a $100 non-refundable administrative fee charged by UW Tacoma International Programs. Travel payments may be made with a personal check, credit card, money order, certified or cashier's check payable to University of Washington, Tacoma (UWT). Please write "Holland Summer 2008" in the memo line of the check.

Not Included in Program Fees:

  • Airfare
  • Ground transportation

  • Personal spending money

*Academic course fee (in lieu of tuition) is due July 11, 2008 (tuition due date for Summer Quarter 2008). Academic course fee is subject to change due to various factors such as currency fluctuation and UW tuition increases.

Refund Conditions for Fees

  1. If you are not accepted to the program, the deposit will be refunded.
  2. If you are accepted and withdraw in writing prior to April 15, 2008 the deposit will be refunded.
  3. Thereafter, you will forfeit the deposit plus any non-recoverable payments already made or committed on your behalf. No refunds will be given for unused accommodations, meals or other fees and services.

Changes in Costs or Scope of the Program

In the event of significant devaluations of the dollar, some adjustments to program activities may be necessary. If there are any political events that might compromise the safety of the participants, a rescheduling or cancellation of the program may be necessary. If such changes occur, students will be notified of the changes and options will be presented.

Program Cancellation

If viable enrollment is not reached by May 1, 2008, the program will be cancelled and all recoverable monies paid in will be refunded.
