B.A. Advising: Overview

During the admissions process, pre-admission advisers, recruiters, and evaluators in the Office of Enrollment Services are available to you. They match your interests to the appropriate program, make sure your records are received and evaluate your credits. Once this process is complete, an admission letter is sent and you become an Urban Studies student.

At that point, the academic adviser and faculty in the Urban Studies program will provide advising for you. Enrollment Services will continue to support you in your stay at UWT through services such as the UWT Counseling Center, Financial Aid, Career Services, and Veterans' Affairs.

You are encouraged to meet with the Urban Studies adviser prior to or during your first quarter. We recommend that you check in with your academic adviser at least once a year. This is a two-year program for most students, so we want to give you all the information you need as soon as possible!

Two Types of Urban Studies Advising

Academic Advising

  • New student orientation
  • Information about meeting admission deficiencies
  • Clarifying degree requirements
  • Approving transfer credits toward the degree
  • Planning and tracking progress in the degree
  • Evaluating your plan for graduation
  • Completing the paperwork necessary for graduation
  • Referrals to other resources (counseling, faculty, etc.)

Faculty Advising

  • Help you fine-tune your degree through course selections
  • Approve alternative courses for degree requirements
  • Provide mentoring during coursework and independent studies
  • Help you articulate the link with your concentration and your future goals, including:
    • Pathways to careers
    • Graduate study
