The Professional
Development Committee (Julie Buffington) led a discussion on how to improve
professional development. The following are suggestions on how we can
improve professional development:
- Need
to build comprehensive list of what is available.
- List
of needs.
- Most
common problem, “I don’t have time”.
- Link
to the Human Resources training web page (UWT).
- Brown
bags.
- “Professional
Development Day” organized by staff.
- Professional
Development is not job-focused, think more ?
- Managers
need to be involved, supportive.
- Small
scholarship fund for textbooks and conferences.
- Career
center is open to staff.
- Web
survey on Professional Development training.
- What
faculty on campus could be used.
- Stress
importance of taking time.
- Can
the Mentoring Program play a role?
- Cooperation
between departments to cover for each other.
- Some
people work at UWT because they want to pursue education.
Communication
- Having
committee meeting minutes online (this would be a huge first step).
- More
transparency and open communication.
- Forum
for non-supervisory staff
- Would this cause too much separation/isolation?
- Would people be intimidated?
- Is the UWTSA too focused on professional staff?
- The
Budget Forum worked very well. Could it be expanded to all-campus forums?
Managed by UWTSA?
- Should
Coffee with Chancellor meetings have more focus on a particular issue?
- More
avenues are always better.
