of Washington Tacoma Staff Association
Minutes from the July 21, 2005 General Meeting
- Jessica Roshan shared with us Pat Spakes’ interest in the Pierce County Hunger Walk 2005, which will be held on Sunday, October 2. UWT is one of the participants. Volunteers are needed to be route markers, distribute water to the walkers, face painters, and set-up crew. We will also have a team(s) that will walk. Jessica will follow up with an email asking for participants.
- Barbeque update – student groups and staff members will be donating grills for the UWTSA barbeque. Deana Holmes will also be donating a grill for this event. The volunteers are now in place. We have already received $250 in donations for the barbeque (this does not include the 30 pre-ticket sales). Thank you to all that contributed. Our goal is to sell 150 burgers. Pat Spakes will be selling tickets at the barbeque. Naarah said that the UWT Staff Association has received $132 in staff donations and that the barbeque will cost about $350. She is hoping the Staff Association will make a $250 profit from the barbeque. Please see Brian, Naarah, Beth, or Lorna, if you would like to purchase tickets prior to the barbeque.
- It was agreed upon that the folks in the Autism Center would now be members of the UWT Staff Association.
- Speaking on behalf of the UWT Professional Development Task Force, Julie Buffington said that “Game Day” was a huge success, with about 80 folks in attendance! She went on to say that Pat Spakes provided the task force with a small budget, which will help with future events. Julie also talked about the types of events we can look forward to in 2005-06.
- Jill Carnell is working on the next installment of the staff newsletter, which should be out before the barbeque.
- Joe Chynoweth reported on the 2707 committees. He said that staff members have approached both him and Jessica about inequity of staff not being paid for committee work like the faculty does. So, how can we make staff feel just as valued? State law does not allow payment to professional or classified staff. The staff association is looking into this for positive resolution to this issue.
- Crystal Perrine introduced new staff member, Beth Jeffrey, who works in Student Affairs.
- Julie Buffington suggested a kick-off celebration for the new academic year.
- On behalf of the Student Orientation Workgroup Committee, Deana Holmes asked if the UWTSA would be willing to do a barbeque as part of the New Student Orientation “Taste of UWT” on Friday, September 16. Student leaders will be available to help. The event will take place after hours. Some area restaurants will be giving coupons and discounts to students to come to their restaurants.
- Bronwyn Pugh has a Wild Wave discount tickets ($11 off). Wild Waves kicks back one dollar to the Combined Fund Drive.
- Brian Anderson informed us that the copy center now belongs to UWT and that Keith Ward is now a UWT staff member.
- Beth Ahlstrom thanked folks for their $1,100 contribution to the 2005-Dog-A-Thon.
- Ruth Rea and Sondra Perdue will be participating in the Breast Cancer Walk this weekend.
