Frequently Asked Questions

Must I complete the GRE or GMAT before admission to a UW Tacoma graduate program?
Yes, for every program except Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Nursing (MN). Taking the GRE is optional for MSW applicants.
Which test do I take on the GRE?
UW Tacoma graduate programs require the general test that consists of three sections that measure abilities in analytical, quantitative and verbal skills.
Where can I take the GRE or GMAT?
Tests are computerized and appointments are required. Both tests are administered locally at the Sylvan Learning Center on South Hill in Puyallup. Call (253) 848-0771 for an appointment. UW Tacoma does not administer the tests.
How much does the test cost?
The cost for the GRE is $140, and the GMAT is $250. Payment is required when test appointments are made. In some instances, students eligible for financial aid may obtain a test fee waiver. Contact Financial Aid at (253) 692-4400 for further information.
How long will the test take?
The test usually takes 3-4 hours.
When will I know my scores?
Unofficial scores are available on the day of testing (except the writing score). Complete official scores are mailed by Educational Testing Service (ETS) to you and to the institutions you designate approximately two weeks after testing.
How long are my scores valid?
Scores are valid for five years. Should you take the test more than once, all scores are reported by ETS. Some programs may accept scores older than five years. Contact the individual program for more information.
Is there help available to study for the GRE and GMAT?
Yes. The KeyBank Professional Development Center at the University of Washington Tacoma offers test preparation classes for the GRE, GMAT and LSAT. Contact the Center at (253) 692-4618 for further information.
In addition, self-study books are available at larger bookstores and resources are suggested on the GRE and GMAT Web sites.
Is there a minimum score required for admission? What does "competitive scores" mean?
There are no minimum test scores. Each applicant is considered on the basis of his or her complete application packet. Competitive scores are determined by each year's applicant pool and cannot be predicted in advance of the application deadlines. Contact the individual program for more information.
Can I repeat the test if I do not perform well?
Yes. ETS will report all scores on the official test results document. Most graduate programs will consider the most recent scores.

Remember, the GRE or GMAT is only one component of your application packet and it is important to keep it in perspective. Applicants are considered based upon their complete application packet.
