The University of Washington Tacoma offers a variety of scholarships for students. Some are based on merit; others require applicants to demonstrate evidence of financial need. For more information on general UWT scholarships, visit the UWT scholarship website.
Other Scholarships
The Bob & Eleanor Grant Trust provides scholarships for first-generation college students studying natural or environmental sciences. The Trust can provide scholarships of up to $15,000 per year that are renewable based upon satisfactory student progress. Deadline for 2008: April 1, 2008. The Hollings Scholarship Program (through NOAA) provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. Scholarship is limited to 3rd year students. Deadline for 2008: February 15, 2008. Check back winter 2009 for next year's application!
Provides support for academic purposes not already funded by the State of Washington for the Tacoma Branch Campus, such as development of new courses and teaching materials, support for faculty research related to the improvement of instruction, student financial aid, improvement of classroom facilities and acquisition of instructional equipment. Available to enhance the educational experiences of students across campus who are engaged in
research with faculty. Students receive research scholarships to pursue research in a variety of disciplines. A few examples of UW
undergraduates' research projects funded by a Research Scholarship include: designing a telecommunication network to bridge five Asian
Pacific Economic Cooperation economies, researching genetic mechanisms that may lead to identifying the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's
disease, and researching the history of the ethnic media in the Pacific Northwest and examining its role within local ethnic
communities. Two-quarter ($4,000) and three-quarter ($6,000) scholarships, depending on the duration of your involvement in your research
project. Awards are made quarterly in $2,000 installments.
Eligibility Requirements: Research Scholarship applicants must already be engaged in research with faculty, by the beginning of the quarter in which they apply.
For example, students applying for the Autumn 2006 deadline must have started their research by the beginning of autumn quarter.
Candidates must be UW undergraduate students registered full time (at least 12 credits), pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
During their period of funding, scholars must continue with their research and remain full-time students (except summer
quarter—students need only to be enrolled for one credit to receive funds). Applications are accepted from UW Bothell, Seattle, and Tacoma students. Candidates do not need to be U.S. citizens.
Tacoma Community College is offering Scholarships for Upward Mobility (SUM) to students interested in studying engineering, computer science, math, science or information technology. Deadline for 2008: April 15, 2008. Click here to view the 2008 SUM Application.
UWT International Programs offers $1,250 scholarships for matriculated UWT students participating in a study-abroad programs. Scholarships can be applied towards any UW study-abroad opportunity, but priority will be given to applicants participating in a UWT program. Deadline for 2008: April 4, 2008.
Scholarships from $750 - $1,000 to support undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of degrees specializing in the fields of Environmental Science.. This year's Applications were due April 15, 2008, please check back soon

The Make a Splash grant program invites groups and individuals to apply for up to $2,500 in funds for education or restoration projects that focus on preventing pollution and protecting or restoring clean water. Past projects have included field trips, science day camps, habitat restoration activities, hazardous waste collection, rain barrel installation and a variety of educational activities--even a puppet show and a coloring book! The deadline to mail in applications is May 16. - Make it your own awards (Case Foundation)
The Make It Your Own Awards™ are a direct response to research showing that many people feel disconnected from public leaders and institutions and don't believe they have the power to make a lasting difference in their community. Grants of $100-$35,100 given to Individuals. Previous deadline August 8.
- Multicultural Initiative in the Marine Sciences: Undergraduate Participation
The National Science Foundation-funded MIMSUP program is designed to increase diversity within the next generation of marine scientists. Participants receive intensive training in the marine sciences and in professional opportunities available to those who choose this career path. Applications are encouraged, in particular, from U.S. citizens belonging to groups currently underrepresented in the marine sciences (i.e., Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, African Americans, Latino/Hispanics and Pacific Islanders).
Eight selected students spend two quarters (January 6 - June 12) at the Shannon Point Marine Center taking introductory and specialized courses in the marine sciences (31 quarter credit hours), attending seminars and workshops, exploring career opportunities, and engaging in supervised research. They also attend a regional or national scientific meeting. After the program, students return to their home institutions to complete their undergraduate programs.
Funding covers tuition and fees for 2 quarters, housing and more! Applications for the 2009 program must be received by Wednesday, November 12, 2008.
Opportunities to participate in research and development relating to science, math, and engineering
- Research Apprenticeship Program
Intensive, full-time research training experiences are offered to qualified undergraduates and post-baccalaureates in Spring and Autumn quarters. One to four teams of 5-12 students each work on one focused research problem guided by a group of faculty, postdoctoral and graduate student mentors. Students selected for participation receive financial support ($3000) to defray costs of tuition, room and board at FHL.
Students will be registered for 15 credits. Students should consult with their advisor prior to registration.

Undergraduate Research Awards
The University Libraries, in cooperation with the Undergraduate Research Program, sponsors the Library Research Award for Undergraduates competition, recognizing University of Washington students who produce significant inquiry requiring use of information resources, the library and its collections. All undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Washington are encouraged to submit research projects for the award competition. 2008 Deadline: Monday, May 19, 2008.
